It took a while for my life to get going in the right direction. Like so many others, I think, I didn't immediately know what I wanted. After some career aptitude tests, my biggest dream of becoming a photographer didn't seem like a wise choice. Listening to all those wise people, I became a civil servant through high school and the Public Administration Academy. After some wandering, I ended up at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven.
Close to the fire of creativity, a feeling of "going for your own creativity" kept nagging, and worse.A study of Higher Photography at the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts in Hasselt, Belgium, provided the solution.I initially combined my studies with the Van Abbemuseum and later with internships at a photo shop and with architectural photographer Jannes Linders in Rotterdam. Then I started my own company, Eyck Photography.Just as in the early part of my life, prioritizing the wishes of others over myself and literally playing the "cheerful Frenchman," that wasn't how I wanted to work.I want to show something unique in my work, the layer beneath the obvious. Perhaps a good example is the series At First Sight. The first impression is a series of men in hoodies, dark, gloomy, and perhaps even threatening. They are my friends and people from my circle.
Apparently, first impressions aren't always the best or the right ones.I like to start with an overview and then work my way to depth. With a wide field of view, you see a lot and yet also nothing. From the breadth to the depth, the layer beneath the first impression is surprising and sometimes even awakening.I also like to maintain this attitude in my assignments. I remain subservient to the assignment and the client, but I also try to go beyond that.Perhaps (probably) self-made, but this aspect of photography also sometimes inspires the client to take things a step further. Essential in my photography is that it communicates, both in my assignments and in my freelance work. I love communicating; without it, it's lonely.
